Pedestrian struck at vigil for previous hit-and-run in LA

A vigil for a bicyclist killed in a hit-and-run accident erupted into violence Wednesday when a pedestrian was struck by a automobile in another hit-and-run and the crowd smashed the window of a reacting police vehicle, Los Angeles authorities said.

The group gathered at a South Los Angeles intersection where a cyclist died a day earlier after being hit by a vehicle, police Officer Tony Im said.

A tan Honda Accord sped through the intersection around 1 p.m. Wednesday, reaching and injuring one human, Im said.

Video from the scene aired by KTL-ATV shows the victim flying off the car’s hood and landing on the pavement. He then got up and hopped on one foot to the sidewalk, where he collapsed to the ground. His condition was not immediately available.

Im said the crowd grew angry and threw rocks and bottles at a police vehicle, violating a window. No policemen were hurt.

No arrests were reported. Researchers are searching for suspects in both accidents, officials said.

The vigil was being held at the intersection in memory of a cyclist who was struck by a hit-and-run motorist driving a white Porsche Cayenne around 1 p.m. Tuesday. The victim, a human in his 20 s, succumbed at a hospital.
