Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson and director Cate Shortland recently spoke in an interview with Sophie Elmhirst of The Gentlewoman, during which Shortland revealed that “the Black Widow movie was possibly Scarlett‘s last movie playing the character”. The comment, made by Shortland, comes as no surprise, especially since Scarlett’s Black Widow character was recently killed in the Avengers Endgame movie as a sacrifice for the ”soul stone”. However, if there’s anything we’ve learnt from the MCU, it’s that any character killed, can easily be revived at any point in the franchise, regardless of the kind of death suffered by the character. This means, Scarlett Johansson could possibly be making another appearance in future MCU movies.
At the moment, there hasn’t been any official confirmation from either Marvel or Scarlett Johansson on this matter. Nonetheless, if she does retire from her role as the Black Widow in the MCU, she’ll join the likes of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans as one of the first actors casted as Avengers in the MCU, to recently retire from their roles in the franchise.
Black Widow will be Scarlett Johanson’s first solo movie as the Black Widow and the 25th overall movie in the MCU. It’s directed by Cate Shortland and features stars such as Scarlett Johannson, Florence Pugh, Rachel Weiss, David Harbour and O.T Fagbenle. The movie would serve as the prequel to Black Widow’s activities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and follow Natasha Romanoff as she confronts the darker parts of her ledger. Black Widow is set to be released on July 9th, 2021 in theatres around the world.
